  CAVING
Explore the fascinating prehistoric wonders of 500 million-year-old Wavulpone’s ‘Cave of Bats’

The fascinating activity of caving is relatively new to Sri Lanka, but with such an impressive range of caves located throughout the country just waiting to be explored it's an unusual experience that should not be missed!

Wavulpone Cave is an isolated cavern set against the eastern slopes of the Rakwana Mountain Range close to Uda Walawe National Park. It contains a large number of stalactites and stalagmites and is estimated to be approximately 500 million-years-old. As you journey 300m underground to discover this fascinating prehistoric world, look out for fossils on the cavern wall and a beautiful waterfall at the centre fed by a stream that runs through the cave. With only a torch to light your way, you might encounter water monitors and amphibians as well as thousands of bats as you explore this mysterious prehistoric cave.

This tour is conducted on request; clients will be met at Pallebedda or Uda Walawe Junction and transferred to a base to walk the short distance of around 500m through beautiful forest to the cave entrance, looking out for birds and wildlife on the way. Return transfers to and from your hotel should be arranged through your travel desk. Alternatively, we can provide this service on request.
