Staying in one of the world's most magical garden retreats is surely a must on any Sri Lankan itinerary. Lunuganga's beautiful house and 25-acre gardens were lovingly created over several decades by 'the father of Asian architecture' Geoffrey Bawa as his vision of a tropical garden idyll. Located on a promontory beside the Dedduwa Lake, Lunuganga's gardens are like a series of spacious outdoor rooms whose position has been carefully chosen to make the best of the fabulous vistas over the lake, tropical jungle and paddy fields. Statues, pavilions, courtyards and lily ponds provide much interest beside majestic banyans, silvery rubber trees and ageing frangipani.
Accommodation consists of four highly unique suites in the original plantation house and a further two bedrooms in the secluded cottage of Cinnamon Hill. Each offer a fascinating insight into one of the world's most celebrated artists as well as providing much comfort, privacy and inspiration. With such delightful surroundings, you have the privilege of wandering the gardens at will and picnicking in one of the many picturesque pockets of the property or even aboard a boat on the lake. By evening choose an idyllic spot from where to sip the hotel's signature cocktail - the Lunuganga Sour - and watch the changing colours in the ever-darkening sky.
Lunuganga doesn't have a swimming pool but the famed beaches of Bentota - its activities and attractions - are only a ten-minute drive away. Bawa's brother Bevis's smaller but equally as inspiring garden Brief is also worth a visit and located within a short distance from the hotel. The property is only open to guests from December to April each year - the rest of the time it is reserved for garden tours and resident artists under the management of the Lunuganga Trust. |
