At just eight kilometres south of Galle, Apa Villas Talpe is close enough to the exciting attractions of the local area whilst remaining firmly in a world of its own. The hotel comprises three distinctive ocean-view villas that together offer seven spacious suites whose wide verandahs open onto a large palm-shaded grassy garden cooled by sea breezes. Built in a colonial modern style and adorned with artefacts collected from his global travels, Apa is the brainchild of Insight Guides publisher Hans Hoefer who converted the property in 1996. At the heart of the garden, the greeny-blue infinity pool is so beautifully sited - almost seeming to stretch out into the Indian Ocean beyond - that it made the cover of Conde Nast Traveller magazine in July 2004.
Apa Villas is the ideal beach retreat. Columns, wide verandahs, courtyards and open spaces allow the air to circulate whilst polished cement in the form of floors, bed bases and recliners give the property a minimalist feel, which is ideal for the tropical environment. The three villas each house spacious and homely suites - some of whose bathrooms are open air and beautifully decorated with sunken baths and Turkish tiles - that are ideal for couples and large enough for young families. When each villa is sold on its own, they make ideal mini-apartments for families and groups of friends. Private verandahs in front of each offer intimate dining experiences.
With its stunning pool, picturesque sun deck overlooking the sea, large palm-shaded garden, delicious cuisine and homely atmosphere, Apa is a place to get away from it all - a library filled with books and magazines replaces mod cons such as TVs, DVD and CD players. The attractions and beaches of Galle are just a short drive away, making Apa an idea base, and one which is also very child-friendly. |
